Journey to the Center
The Cass Activity Center in Detroit provides a weekday skill-building program for adults with developmental disabilities and dementia who are unable to care for themselves and may require round-the-clock attention. Reverend Fowler, Director of Cass Community Social Services says, “We need to love them for who they are and not who we want them to be.”
Services began in 1986 with a social recreation program. Many families are overwhelmed and unable to care for loved ones with developmental disorders and dementia. There are about 60 program participants at Cass. Most participants live in Adult Foster Care Homes where they are watched over and cared for, yet encouraged to go through an independent daily routine. Cass offers them a chance to get out and focus on skill building and community interaction.
To qualify for the program seniors must be low-income and at least 55 years old, though some exceptions are made. Attendants gather for six hours each weekday; they enjoy games, exercises, and even share a hot meal. Fowler says the budget for the senior program this year is $400,000. It is funded by government grants and donations from corporations and individuals. Ethel Watkins who works at the center loves her job, “I’m helping people who are looking for someone to give them a hug or smile.”
